No Lane Closures Over Holiday Weekend Preparations For Next Traffic Shift Continue

August 31, 2017

In accordance with Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Drivers First initiative, no construction-related lane closures are scheduled on or near the New NY Bridge project site until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Certain maintenance, safety and security work will continue during the weekend. Drivers First, launched in 2012, prioritizes the convenience of motorists to ensure that traffic disruptions are as minimal as possible for drivers at highway and bridge projects across the state.

Landings Preparations
Following the shift of Rockland-bound traffic to the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) continues work near the Rockland and Westchester landings in preparation for the shift in Westchester-bound traffic to the structure, scheduled to occur later this fall. Traffic will then consist of four lanes in each direction, separated by a concrete barrier to allow for construction of the second span to be completed. All lanes on the new bridge are similar in width to the lanes on the old bridge.

Upcoming landing operations include installation of asymmetric median barrier with corresponding moment slabs, drainage, temporary asphalt preparation in Rockland and completion of concrete pavement in Westchester. Drivers are reminded that the posted speed limit on the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge is 45 mph for the safety of motorists and construction workers. The New York State Thruway Authority strongly encourages motorists to abide by the reduced speed limit and remain alert as they travel over the new bridge.

Additional work includes:

  • Structural steel and stay cable installation on eastbound span
  • Support for river-based work from the Rockland trestle
  • Survey inspections on the existing bridge
  • Pier substructure work
  • Expansion joint operations
  • Internal tower work
  • Maintenance dock construction
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing
  • Construction of maintenance and state police facilities

Boater Safety
Expect periodic closures of the main navigation channel due to on-going construction through the end of this year. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
