Girder Installation Resumes On Eastbound Span Structural Steel to be Installed Near Rockland Shoreline Next Week

November 30, 2017

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) is scheduled to resume girder assembly installation on the new bridge’s second span next week. TZC will utilize mobile cranes to raise and place the girder assemblies at the Rockland approach.

The assemblies are large sections of structural steel, composed of girders measuring up to 12 feet tall. The installation follows the dismantling and removal of the old bridge’s roadway near the Rockland and Westchester shorelines.

Tower Crane Removal
TZC has begun operations to dismantle and remove the two red tower cranes from the second span. Both cranes, which serviced the construction of the main span roadway and four 419-foot towers, are scheduled to be removed within the coming weeks.

Additional work includes:

  • Dismantling of the old bridge’s roadway
  • Pier substructure work
  • Internal tower work
  • Maintenance dock construction
  • Electrical equipment installation and testing
  • Landscaping near bridge landings
  • Excavation, drainage work and concrete paving in Westchester County
  • Second span foundation work and abutment construction in Rockland County
  • Construction of Thruway maintenance and State Police facilities in Tarrytown

Boater Safety
Expect periodic closures of the main navigation channel due to on-going construction and extensive demolition activities. Cranes, barges and other equipment will occupy parts of the channel during this time. Boaters are strongly encouraged to avoid the project site during the closures and to avoid the Regulated Navigation Areas, located east and west of the main channel.

Times and dates of the closures are subject to change and will appear in the U.S. Coast Guard’s weekly Notice to Mariners; on the project’s Twitter feed (@NewNYBridge); and broadcast on Marine Radio Channel 22A. Tappan Zee Constructors can be contacted via Marine Radio Channel 16 for assistance.

Rockland and Westchester marine units continue to patrol the project site.
